A Brief Guide to: Paris and Nantes, France

by on April 9, 2010

At the end of March I embarked on an adventure. I wouldn’t want to play up the adventure, it was by no means a difficult, life endangering feat, but I’d never done anything like it before so I believe it worthy of a write up.

As mentioned three weeks ago, I had some holiday to take up at work, so decided a European adventure was the way to spend it.

France, the Czech Republic and Sweden were the victims. I’d never been to the latter two countries before, which lead to much excitement.

Especially for Sweden, where the grass is covered in sheet-ice and the girls are pretty, as a Scandinavian version of the song would go.

The Czech Republic and Sweden will be covered in two separate articles. For now, let yourself indulge in France.

I should mention that I had never been on a plane before this trip. A couple of my new years resolutions this year were to fly, and to visit Paris. TICK.

Paris was okay. I travelled over by Eurostar, which was a lot less sensational than I hoped to be honest – even at fuck-knows-when o’clock in the morning.

A Frenchman with about as much respect for personal space as I have for overpaid footballers fell asleep on me on the train, which wouldn’t have been so bad if he hadn’t tied a scarf over his eyes making him look like a victim of bedroom masturbation gone wrong.

I only had about nine hours in Paris, so I visited all notable sights by Metro, which I am sure took away from the city somewhat. All this was of course forgotten though when I boarded a DOUBLE DECKER TRAIN to Nantes.

You should have seen the look of excitement creep across my face when I realised my seat was on the upper deck…

Enough of that. Next stop, Nantes.

Nantes is nice. I stayed with a friend and former housemate of mine from London. I was almost certainly the only tourist in town at certain points throughout the two days I had to explore, but that was by no means a bad thing.

On my second day in Nantes I visited an American school, sitting in on a vocabulary class – half the students were French, the other half American. The first 45 minutes of the ‘lesson’ was spoken in French, the latter 45 minutes in English.

It’s fair to say I EXCELLED during the second half.

From Nantes I headed back to Paris (single decker train – unlucky) to make a mad dash across the city to catch my FIRST EVER FLIGHT from Charles De Gaulle to Prague.

When we took off in the evening, I looked out behind me to see Paris lit up in the distance. You couldn’t call me a romantic, but it was the best view of the Eiffel tower I’d seen all week.

It’s true though, stickers on faces are prohibited which is a shame because some people could really do with a sticker on their face.

It’s a shame stickers on faces and drawn-on beards are slowly falling out of fashion.
