Often at various faculties, teachers ask students to write an essay. This helps to better understand the course of the students’ thoughts and sometimes opens them from an unexpected side (provided, of course, that the works they wrote themselves).
Many students are frightened by this task, because, at first glance, it is completely incomprehensible what they want from them and how the task ready for delivery should look. But in fact, writing an essay is much simpler than an essay or coursework, because in many respects it looks like school essays on a given topic, and with them for several years of study at school everyone should have become acquainted closely enough.
So what is an essay?
If you translate from French, then an essay is an attempt, an essay, a trial. In other words, it is a kind of literary genre, which is distinguished by a small amount (as a rule, up to 5 pages), the absence of strict rules on the design and structure of content and presentation. For example, if for writing a term paper or a thesis some methodological recommendations and design requirements are usually developed and published, with a clear list of the chapters to be contained in the work, their content, the minimum number of sources used with specific years of publication, etc. , then for the essay, there are usually no requirements or they are minimal and limited to the amount of work (3-5 pages) and strict requirements for the uniqueness of the text (sometimes up to 90%).
If you have to write an essay, the simplest thing to begin is to imagine that this is not a written work, but an oral question that was asked at a lecture or at a seminar, and you need to answer it. Speak to yourself or out loud what you have to tell on a given topic. You can first refresh in the memory of certain questions proposed for discussion in the essay (here no one will forbid you to peek into the original sources), and after that build your answer. State everything that comes to your mind, and try to remember the course of your thoughts. Ideally, if at the same time you can write down the main and most successful thoughts. Did you talk? Understand that they expressed everything they wanted? Fine!
